All the academic teams at Mishawaka had an incredible showing last school year, with multiple
teams making it to state competitions. Science Olympiad was one of these lucky teams and
finished their season with a 21st place ranking at state. Following an incredible season, the team has high hopes, including returning to state and possibly moving on to nationals.
Many members of the team graduated last year, but this has not been a major concern with the number of new members that have signed up. One of these new members is Kati Vandygriff who says, “I am incredibly excited to be on the team and be able to show off my skills in my events.” The new members aren’t the only ones excited for the season. Returning member Sean McGarry states, “Members will need to put forth their highest quality work in each event to better their chances of taking the team to state again this year.”
Practices began October 15th and run every Tuesday and Thursday. The team is led by Ms.
Barendreght. There are 23 events, and they cover all branches of science. The team is currently in preparation for their upcoming invitational at Whiting High School on December 5th.
Invitationals will then continue to run until February 13th, the regional competition where they hope to have an even better showing than last year.
The Science Olympiad team plans to have an incredible and progressive season. Keep an eye out for their results at the upcoming competitions.
