It was a chilly one at Steele Stadium on Friday night where the Cavemen went helmet to helmet against Gary West Side High School and won 40-0. The Cavemen are 2-1 in the season.
The Cavemen scored a touchdown on all possessions of the ball in the first quarter. Junior Andrew Mason scored the first touchdown of the night, leading the Cavemen 6-0. With a little over four minutes left in the first quarter, Sophomore quarterback Justin Fisher scored, leading the Cavemen 13-0.
“My responsibilities as quarterback is to lead the offense, and do things such as get us into the right formation or running the right play, but then to also just be there to encourage our guys. Then most importantly just do everything I can to help us come out victorious,” Fisher said.
In the second quarter,Fisher, Senior Captain Donovan Snyder, and Senior Ethan Fowler added touchdowns to the scoreboard, giving the Cavemen a heavy 33-0 lead. Senior Brandon Pierson scored a five yard touchdown with over four and a half minutes left, leaving the score 40-0 at half-time.
“I do not feel like I have more responsibility than any other player on the team just because I am captain. Being captain for me just means I have to lead by example and do my assignments out on the football field. As a team, we all have our jobs to do and no one job is more important than another,” Snyder said
Drew Mason had 10 carries on 63 yards, Fowler with 4 carries on 43 yards, Fisher with 2 carries on 72 yards, and Snyder with 3 carries on 49 yards whereas Gary West had a total of 34 yards of offense splitting the yardage equally between the air and the ground.
The Cavemen beat Portage 42-27 in their season opener, then suffered their first loss when they faced East Noble.
Join the Cavemen this Friday under the lights at Steele Stadium as they play South Bend Adams at 7:00.
