Girls Track is off to a Hot Start

The Mishawaka High School Girls’ Track team recently discovered a win against arch rival Penn in girls track, on April 10th. According to Track Coach Chris Kowalewski, there was an issue with the scoreboard during the meet.

“A honest mistake. The excel program was not adding our score column correctly, I didn't get a chance double check score until early next day, but by that time Penn already caught the error and was in the process of making the change,” said Kowalewski, “it happens, however it would've been nice for our girls, especially the seniors to celebrate a victory on Penn's track.”

Senior Madison Kreil was also very excited about beating Penn.

“It was more of an aftershock since we found out the next day,” said Kreil, “It was amazing that we beat one of the top opponents without having a track, I was very proud of how our girls performed.” The victory left the team feeling optimistic, but Kowalewski is looking ahead, at bigger goals. “We're looking really good overall as a team, but we need to get stronger in middle distance and be consistent in our field events. We have some of the top performers in several events, but championships are won with your second person in each event,” said Kowalewski, “If we can score in all sixteen track events with top two girls, then we have a great chance of winning in the post-season, that how we won two conference and a sectional championship in 2012 and 2013.”

Kreil is also excited about how the season has been going.

“We have won all of our meets so far, and we also had girls break records and go to state during the indoor season,” said Kreil, “As a senior I want to keep this program continues its greatness, and never have any future runner feel neglected.” Though the MHS home track is still under construction, home support is still important to the team. “Although we don't have any home meets, come out to support the girls if you can,” said Kowalewski, “They take a lot of pride in how hard they work and the Penn win was a big confidence boost; but they would love to see the student body and staff support them at NIC and Sectional.” It is still early in the track season, but Kowalewski is confident about the team, and excited for the future.
