It’s Time To Duel! Pointing the spotlight on our Yu-Gi-Oh! Club

Monsters. Magic. Traps. Spells. All of these things sound completely out of place in our modern society, right? When’s the last time anyone has seen a dragon flying around? (Has anyone ever seen a dragon flying around?) Well, apparently, our very own Yu-Gi-Oh! Club has, alongside a host of other mythical beasts and strange creatures they use to battle each other in a test of skill and cards.

Now, you’re probably thinking to yourself: We have a Yu-Gi-Oh! Club? What’s a Yu-Gi-Oh? To answer the last question, Yu-Gi-Oh! was originally a Japanese manga created back in the late 1990’s, which spawned an insanely popular trading card game of the same name that the club is based on. The manga follows a boy named Yugi Mutou, who after solving an ancient puzzle, awakens a gambling alter-ego within his body. The trading card game is in fact based off of a card game that exists within the manga.

If you are afraid that you might have problems learning how to play this game, don’t be. “The rules of the game are pretty complicated, as is with most trading card games, but learning the rules isn’t a huge problem,” says Dawson Hobkirk, a member of the club.

“It’s all very casual and relaxed. We have a lot of tournaments, but they’re laid back. If someone needs help learning the game, we help. It’s a pretty cool little group.” He also says that the club is looking for new members and all skill levels are welcome to the club.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Club is just one of many clubs here that our school has to offer, albeit one that caters to a very specific group of people. If you are interested, the club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-4:15 in Room 233.
