Movie Review: Are we waving goodbye to The 5th Wave?

Updated: Mar 5, 2019

The new flick The 5th Wave hit theaters January 22nd with not as big of a box office acclaim as expected. Critics and viewers aren't finding much interest or as thrilling of a plot as hoped for. Let's get the inside scoop on this not so hot movie.

This dystopian film is set in post apocalyptic Earth where main character Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Mortez) is fighting for her life and trying to reunite with her family. After a series of four traumatic alien attacks, the world is in utter chaos. Cassie is afraid she cannot trust anyone along her journey back to safety. She is attempting to escape before the fifth attack from invaders, when she meets a mysterious man. Evan (Alex Roe) is Cassie's last hope for anyone who can be trusted. The two are forced into a mutual alliance as they are working toward their escape. Most of the population has been wiped out, and there is still one more wave of rage to come from the aliens. Will Cassie and Evan make it out alive before the fifth wave? Hit the theater to find out the rest.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, many were disappointed by the outcome of this movie. Comments include things like “this has been done before” and “the plot didn't have much depth.” Unfortunately The 5th Wave may have gotten a bit too big for its britches. The futuristic, earth-shattering movies have become a bit more popular with series like The Hunger Games and Divergent and I believe too many directors are just trying to do what appeals to viewers. Best of luck to The 5th Wave as it will be in theaters the next few weeks.
